  Q: Where is Mrs Black going?

  3. M: Hello! This is Mr.Johson's speaking.

  Can you put me through to Mr.Smith?

  W: Sorry Mr. Smith is not in at the moment.

  Mr. Black is in, and can decide anything.

  Do you want to talk to him?

  Q: Who can decide anything at the moment?

  4. W: Tomorrow I shall go abroad with my father.

  And we'll stay there for three weeks.

  W: Aren't you lucky?

  Q: What does the man mean?

  5. M: Mary, why were you late for class this morning?

  W: Oh, I'm sorry. I'm overslept and missed the train.

  Q: Why did Mary miss the class?

  6. M: My car is in the garage.

  It's old and broken. I want a new car.

  W: New car? Not unless you are promoted.

  Q: What can you infer from the text?

  7. M: How could anyone survive this accident?

  W: It's a miracle.

  There were two men in the truck and four women with two children in the car

  but no one was badly hurt.

  Q: Which of the following is right?

  8. W: Can you come to my birthday party tomorrow afternoon, Uncle Smith?

  M: I'd like to Mary, But I can't.

  I'll be in surgery at 3 o'clock.

  I'll be operating on a patient then.

  Q:What's the profession of the man?

  9.W:I was told that the flood was so big that the railway was destroyer.

  How did you get there?

  M: Nor was the ship. But I got there in only 3 hours. Are you clear?

  Q: Can you imagine how did the man get there?

  M: It's not too bad. I was a bit lucky, the seat belt saved me.

  Section B

  Today I want to help you with a study reading method known as SQ3R.

  The letters stand for five steps in the reading (11)-{process

  Survey,Question,Read,Review,Recite.

  Each of the steps should be done carefully and in the order mentioned.

  In all study reading, a survey should be the first step.

  Survey means to look quickly.

  In study reading you need to look quickly at titles

  words in darker or larger print

  words with (12)-{capital} letter

  (13)-{illustrations}, and chart

  Don't stop to read complete sentence.

  Just look at the important (14)-{divisions} of the materials.

  The second step is question.

  Try to form questions based on your survey.

  Use the question words who,what,when,where,why and how.

  Now you are ready for the third step---Read.

  You will be reading the (15)-{titles} and important words that you looked at in the survey

  But this time you will read the examples and (16)-{details} as well.

  Sometimes it is useful to take notes while you read.

  I have had students who(17)-{preferred} to underline important point

  and it seemed to be just as useful as note -- taking.

  What you should do,whether you take notes or underline,is to read actively.

  18)-{Think about what you are reading as a series of ideas,not just a sequence of words}.

  The fourth step is review

  Remember the questions that you wrote down before you read the material.

  You should be able to answer them now.

  (19)-{You will notice that some of the questions were treated in more detail in the reading

  Concentrate on those

  Also review materials that you did not consider in your questions.

  The last step is recite

  (20)-{Try to put the reading into your own words

  Summarize it either in writing or orally}.
